He is an active member of the El Paso community and still makes time to coach and mentor a youth basketball program, as well as assist his local parish in fundraisers for the maintenance and growth of his Church. |
Work Experience |
Tommy began his career at the Great American Land & Cattle Co. in 1987 where he learned every aspect of the restaurant business. Very early on, Tommy demonstrated the ability to lead and shared innovate ideas to improve the business which lead to his promotion to General Manager. In 1998 he was recruited by the Texas Workforce Commission, Unemployment Division, where he gained knowledge of labor, employment and unemployment laws. In 2001 Tommy began working for the consulting firm, Corporate Cost Control, based in Dallas, TX. Tommy educated employers and managed unemployment claims for businesses in the Southwest region yet established clientele based throughout 42 states.
In 2004 Tommy joined dmDickason Personnel Services where he managed all unemployment claims and expanded his knowledge of federal retention laws, EEOC, INS and much more. Tommy added the offering of consulting services to dmDickasons’ clientele. That same year Tommy met with the officers of Fred Loya Insurance and introduced HR Consulting services and the value they could bring to the company. One year later he was offered the position of HR Director for Fred Loya Insurance. Tommy restructured the HR Department to ensure both the company and employee needs were being met. He trained management in all aspects of personnel, compliance, licensing, etc., to meet the demand of a growing company. In his eight years with the company Tommy played an intricate role in the Loya Insurance Group's growth from operating in three states to additional six states as well as the acquisition of several insurance companies. Tommy created Cano Hr Group in order to support local businesses with full-service or ala carte HR services. Tommy takes an educational approach, informing companies on everything they need to know in order to remain compliant and avoid costly legal nightmares. Tommy is dedicated to his clients and their overall success. |
Civic Engagement |
Currently serving on the Board of Directors for the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Tommy believes in the El Paso Community and has committed much of his time and energy to its welfare. He co-chaired the El Paso Hispanic Chamber Business Advocacy Committee, chaired the El Paso Hispanic Chamber Administrative Services Committee, served as a committee member of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber Education Foundation, and served on the Board of the El Paso Metro YMCA. Tommy was also a co-founding Board Member of the El Paso Community en Accion organization.
